IRREPLACEABLE: WILDLIFE IN A WARMING WORLD
http://www.irreplaceablewild.org/about/

Climate change has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. Scientists predict that global warming will become a leading cause of species extinction over the next several decades. As we work to address the impacts of global warming on humans—rising sea levels, destructive storms, heat waves, increased disease risks and pollution—we also need to protect imperiled species from a warming world.

The Irreplaceable: Wildlife in a Warming World campaign is a partnership of faith, science, justice, and art to educate policymakers and the public about the impacts of global warming on wildlife. We do this through the beauty and power of images combined with the inspiration and knowledge from science, religion, and conservation law. We believe this diverse partnership will show that we can work together toward a common goal.

The Irreplaceable public education effort includes a traveling photo exhibit, this website, and many outreach events and presentations around the country. Action components includes a “Call to Care” statement to policymakers that we encourage you to sign, letters to local papers, individual actions you can take to stem climate change and promote biodiversity, as well as other steps to protect plants and animals. The photo exhibit will culminate in spring 2009 in Washington, D.C., where we will present all signatures we have gathered to our policymakers, urging them to do more to protect our wildlife from climate change. The more people get involved, the more we, together, will make a difference.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS: Robin Robinson says “this is really great if you have interest in trying to capture the Northern Lights with a digital camera. Review of this would be great in advance of a storm so that one would be ‘ready’ to shoot and not trying to figure out how while the show is going on!” http://www.alaskaphotographics.com/how_to_photograph_northern_lights.shtml

The Photographic Historical Society of New England is proud to present Dr. Jim Bales at its May Photographica Camera Show. Jim will present a lecture on high-speed strobe photography. He is currently the Assistant Director of the Edgerton Center at MIT.

Jim will be lecturing on “Doc” Edgerton and his famous high-speed strobe photography. Doctor Edgerton was the patent holder on the electronic strobe. Doc’s pictures of the milk drop turning into a crown, bullets puncturing balloons as well as the bat swing of Ted Williams froze images that the human brain cannot even imagine never mind capture. Many of Doc’s images have found their way into art museums all over the world.
This free lecture will take place at Americal Center located at Wakefield, MA. The lecture will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 3, 2008.

Jim will be bringing along a few of MIT’s machines for the public to take their own high-speed strobe photographs after the lecture. Please bring your cameras (film or digital) to capture your experiments! This lecture would be of interest to anyone from age 4 to 104. Prepare to be amazed.
